It’s no secret that paint can completely change any space. But take it beyond just painting all the walls the same color. Use one of these six creative options like painting your door, painting your ceiling or painting your moulding a fun color to take things to the next level.

Add a Pop of Color with a Bright Door

Teenagers bedroom with navy blue walls, white trim and a bright red door.

Want to try out a bright color but don’t want to commit to a full room of it? Paint a small area like the inside of a bedroom door. It’s a great way to work a color into your décor without overwhelming your space. Painting just the inside of the door means you won’t be able to see it unless you’re in the room, so take a risk and choose a color that’s different from the rest of your home’s palette. Try a fun red or a trendy shade of green to transform your room.

Add Drama With a Dark Paint Color

A green velvet sofa in a room with a rich brown wall paint color.

A rich paint color can do wonders for defining a space, especially in an open floor plan. Add depth and coziness to a living room with a dynamic shade like HGTV Sherwin Williams Deep Earth. Black and navy are good options too. Since the living room needs to be able to handle the spills, splatters and fingerprints life throws at it, it’s important to choose a paint that's easy to clean. Try the HGTV Sherwin William Infinity® Interior Paint & Primer line of interior paint. It’s scrub resistant and helps protect against stains. Kids and pets are no match for this paint.

Try Color Drenching

For a bold and sophisticated statement, try color drenching. Color drenching is when you use one paint color to cover the walls, moulding, windows and doors. Some even opt to paint the ceiling as well. In this case, a gorgeous deep blue-green is used to transform a living room. Dark espresso wood and brass accents pop against Valspar's Hobgoblin. If you don't have high ceilings, paint them white to prevent the room from appearing smaller and darker.

Tip

Pick two different shades on the same paint swatch for a fool-proof way to ensure the colors go together.

Ditch White Molding and Paint it a Fun Color

Kid's room with a blue half beadboard wall, yellow molding and cream walls.

A kid’s room is the perfect space to play with color. It’s supposed to be a place of fun and whimsy, so don’t be afraid to combine two different colors like blue and yellow in an unexpected way. Try a half beadboard wall in light blue and paint the molding a sunny shade of yellow. Painting the top half of the room white or off-white keeps the room looking fresh and bright. Add yellow and blue accents like throw pillows and wall art to tie everything together.

Tip

When painting a nursery or kid’s room check labels to find a paint with lower total VOC emissions levels. Try using HGTV Home® by Sherwin-Williams Ovation® Plus Interior Paint and Primer. It delivers great coverage while having zero VOCs.

Paint Your Ceiling

Living room with dark green ceiling and orange accent wall.

A unique way to update your room is by painting the ceiling. It will be an arm workout, but the final look will be worth it. To avoid having to cut in near the ceiling, extend the color down the wall a few inches. Use painters tape to get a crisp clean line. Seal the tape by painting over it with the lower wall color first. This ensures that any paint that leaks through the tape will be the lower wall color resulting in fewer touch-ups. Valspar Ultra Flat Ceiling Paint and Primer is a splatter-resistant formula with great coverage, which is helpful when trying to paint above your head.

Tip

If you plan to paint the entire room, it’s best to do the ceiling first. That way you don’t have to worry about splatter.

Draw Attention to Built-Ins with Paint

Small office area with a desk and a built-in bookshelf painted a dark gray.

If you have a built-in bookshelf, a small alcove or any other cool architectural detail in your house, paint is the perfect way to make it stand out. A dark color like charcoal gray will act as a backdrop and make all your accessories and décor pop. If your home wasn’t blessed with built-ins, you can still achieve the same look by painting a wood bookcase or creating a painted arch right on your wall.
