What Is the Most Durable Material for Outdoor Benches?
Wood, aluminum, steel, iron and plastic are all long-lasting options for pre-built outdoor furniture. For a DIY bench like the one in this project, cedar wood is a perfect, long-lasting choice. Cedar is a naturally weather- and insect-resistant material, so it works well for an outdoor DIY bench. It also looks great.
A stain and sealer will enhance the beauty of the cedar and give it even better weather resistance, particularly if you refinish and reseal it every couple of years.
How Do You Make a Simple Outdoor Wooden Bench?
The steps below walk you through building a simple do-it-yourself outdoor bench. Start with the bench legs, then build the end pieces. Attach the end pieces to the front and back rails and the stretcher. Attach the back. Add the seat and finish the bench with exterior stain.
You’ll have a great piece of furniture to expand your outdoor living space in the warmer months.

Decorating Your DIY Bench
The exterior stain you choose will play a major role in the look of your bench. A clear stain will let the natural beauty of the cedar shine through. You can also choose a transparent or semi-transparent stain to add wood tones to coordinate with your other outdoor pieces. But, once you finish the bench, there are other decorative touches you can add to create inviting seating.
- Outdoor throw pillows and cushions add bright colors and dramatic or playful patterns. They can also make your new seating even more comfortable.
- A colorful blanket or throw creates a cozy space for cool spring evenings.
- Container plants are easy to add and easy to mix and match for a perfect combination of living color and texture.
- A small fountain or a set of wind chimes will add an interesting look and create a nice soundscape for outdoor relaxation.
- In the fall months, pumpkins and potted mums add a seasonal touch.
- In winter, string lights and wrapped presents can turn your outdoor seating into outdoor holiday décor.
- Installing a small paver patio will give your bench an attractive foundation in a backyard or along a garden pathway.
