Installing Floating Shelves

Start by making sure the floating shelf can support the weight of the items you plan to display. Once you’re sure you have a suitable shelf, it’s time to install it. These steps show you how to put up a floating shelf that mounts to a backplate on the wall. Your instructions might differ, so follow the steps for your shelf.

Step 1: Locate Wall Studs to Support the Shelf

Use a stud finder to locate wall studs in the installation area. Studs give shelving the best support. Mark stud locations with painter’s tape and use a pencil to mark the tape at the center of each stud.

Note the possibility of wiring, pipes and ductwork behind the wall, particularly if you’re near  an outlet, switch, drain or vent. A stud finder with electrical detection can help you avoid live wires.

Step 2: Mark the Backplate Location

Determine your desired height and measure up from the floor. Mark the height and use a level or laser level to position the shelf backplate. Mark the mounting screw hole locations on the wall, at the centers of studs if possible. Double check to ensure the backplate is level when aligned with the marks.

Step 3: Fasten the Backplate to the Wall

To install the shelf in a stud, align the backplate screw holes with the marks on the wall and use a drill/driver to secure the backplate with screws.

If studs aren’t available, use wall anchors rated for the weight of the shelf and the items you plan to display. Drive the anchors into the wall with a screwdriver or drill pilot holes and tap them in place with a hammer, depending on the instructions. Double check for level and secure the backplate to the anchors with screws.

Caution

Wear safety glasses when using a power drill.

Step 4: Install the Floating Shelf

Slide the shelf over the backplate and align the screw holes in the bottom of the shelf with the holes in the mounting tubes on the backplate. Drive set screws through the shelf and into the mounting tubes. Repeat the steps above for any other shelves.

A Simple Solution to Keeping Track of Screws and Bits
