Cutting Your Corner Shelves

To start your project, you will cut four shelves for your unit.

Step 1: Make Your Frame

Cut two 1 x 4 scrap boards to 24 inches in length and clamp them to your workbench so they form a 90-degree corner. Use a carpenter's framing square to ensure the angle is precise (see Project Diagram, Drawing 1).

Step 2: Mark the Corner Edges

Place the 36-inch round pine disc into the corner where the boards meet. Mark the points on both the disc and the boards where they touch—these will be 90 degrees apart (Drawing 2).
Next, rotate the disc 90 degrees so the first mark on the disc lines up with the second mark on the boards. Mark the new point where the disc now touches the boards (Drawing 3). Rotate the disc once more and mark the fourth point. You may need to tweak the marks slightly to ensure they’re evenly spaced.

Step 3: Mark Your Cut Lines

Using a straight-edge, draw two straight lines across the disc, connecting opposite marks to divide it into four equal quadrants (Drawing 4). Then, draw a line ½-inch to either side of each of the two lines. Apply painter’s tape between the lines to guide your cuts.

Step 4: Cut the Four Shelves

Using a jigsaw, cut along the edges of the tape to create four equal-sized shelves. Finish by sanding all surfaces and edges with 180-grit sandpaper for a smooth, clean look.

Caution

Wear eye protection when using a jigsaw.

Assembling Your Shelves

Now that you have cut your shelves, let's put the pieces together.

Step 1: Attach the Dowels

Remove all hardware from the bifold doors to separate the panels. To join them, drill pilot holes and apply wood glue, then secure two 1-inch square dowels along the edge of one door using 2-inch screws (see Project Diagram, Drawing 5). Align the dowels so they sit flush with the face of the door and match the sides that don’t have any leftover hardware holes.

Step 2: Make the Shelf Panel

Apply wood glue to the dowels, then align the doweled door with the remaining door. Clamp the two doors together securely, and drive screws through to fasten them. This will create the back panel of your shelf.

Step 3: Attach the Shelves

Mark the shelf locations on the assembled doors by referring to the Project Diagram, Drawing 6. Drill pilot holes at each mark to prevent splitting. Apply wood glue to the shelf edges, then position them in place. Secure each shelf using screws with finish washers and tighten just enough to close the joints. The finish washers will help prevent the screws from punching through the thin door skin.

Step 4: Finish with Paint or Stain

Apply your desired finish to the shelf—paint, stain, or seal—to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. Allow it to dry completely before use.
